MGC Recruitment

New members come into KUMGC through a process called "Membership Intake." A student interested in engaging with members is encouraged to attend “MGC week”. MGC week consists of events centered on service, social, and educational programming. It is also an opportunity for students to meet all the chapters and get more information and ask direct questions to those members.

Each organization conducts Intake at different times. When a chapter begins its membership intake program, it will publicize the initial events in what is called recruitment week(s). Interested students should attend these events in order to get the specific details on the requirements to join and meet the members. Each organization in MGC has its own membership requirements that are in addition to KU institutional requirements.

KU REQUIREMENTS

  • A current University of Kansas student in good academic, financial, and disciplinary standing prior to intake

  • Full-time status, having completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at the University of Kansas prior to intake

  • Minimum required KU cumulative grade point average of 2.7 prior to intake

  • It also helps to have prior leadership experience, community service, involvement on campus, etc. Most organizations will want to see your resume to know that you will represent their organization well, as it is a lifetime commitment.

  • Please be aware that some organizations may have a higher GPA or additional requirements, therefore, be sure to reach out to the respective organization(s) to see if you qualify for membership.

There is a plethora of information about these organizations including books and websites. Visit their national and local websites and/or social media accounts and look for any publications that discuss the origin and basic tenants of the organization.

Look for flyers and social media posts about programs and service projects that will be hosted by the chapter(s) that you are interested in. Events are most frequently advertised and up to date via social media.

Your attendance can show your interest in an organization, give you a better understanding of their programs, and allow you an opportunity to make connections with the members.

GET TO KNOW THE MEMBERS

Once you have identified the organization that you are interested in joining, do not be afraid to introduce yourself. Choosing the organization that you would like to join is a serious decision and one that can be greatly impacted by your interactions and conversations with the members.

BE PREPARED

Chapters seek new members that have an understanding, genuine appreciation, and respect for the organization. Excellent candidates for membership are those that have researched its history, exemplify its standards and values, have leadership and community service experience, and can be a positive addition to the chapter.

Take a moment to identify the personal experiences, accomplishments, and beliefs that you can bring to the chapter as a new member.
